A rollercoaster of a day

5 au quotidien and our stories are coming along as usual. Nearly everyone is on their rough copies!
In math, we looked at 5 proposed plans for building roller coasters. We found out that the most important thing when building one is that the first hill has to be the largest, in order to allow for maximum speed during the rest of the course. Students calculated the heights of several hills in the different roller coaster plans, and then decided which one was the best plan.
This afternoon we began another great art project! We critiqued cityscape paintings, in terms of colour, line, and subject matter and put down our ideas on sticky notes. Ask your child which one was their favourite! Then we looked at techniques and shapes for drawing buildings - there were some creative suggestions. Finally, I demonstrated some techniques for using oil pastels and watercolour. If you haven't used these two art mediums together before, it's really neat because the oil pastels resist the watercolour on top, allowing for the pastel to come through. Students got to various stages in their own work, some incorporating roller coasters from this morning. We will continue these next week.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is the Terry Fox Walk/Run. It's not supposed to be too warm tomorrow, so please dress appropriately. If you are a family member who would like to volunteer to supervise, please come to Room 12 at 1:35 and you can come outside with us! For anyone wanting to pick up a student, as far as I know, we will be outside until 3pm.
And remember that Friday is a PD Day!
