Progress Reports, Tornados, and other fun things!

What a fun day today!

First period we were in the library. Students used their library knowledge to find books with their group for science later that day and then were allowed to use the MakerSpace items.

After APQ, many students began the rough copy for the back of their book. Half of the class has finished and we will be moving onto the revising component tomorrow.

After first break, we got our measuring cups out to investigate capacity. Many students have difficult grasping the difference between "volume" and "capacity" and I find the best way to show this is through using various containers and water. Students first estimated how many millilitres each container could hold, measured with the water, and then estimated how many times they would need to fill it up to reach 1000ml, or 1L. We made it dry all the way through the class until clean up time when one group spilt their container haha! It was bound to happen. That's why we don't experiment with chocolate milk ;)

We worked on science for the afternoon. We have finished our conserving energy unit and are moving onto forces, mechanisms, and structures. To begin, students researched a given natural force (tsunami, earthquake, hurricane, tornado) in small groups and answered a few questions. It was great that so many students could bring in a device, as they were able to watch videos and discuss what was happening. Students quickly presented a few of their answers to the class for the last 20min. Ask your child what they learned - I know I sure learned a few new things!

Also, I'm sure you've noticed that progress reports when home today. Please read them over with your child and complete the bottom part about creating a goal (to be returned to me). I'm looking forward to chatting with everyone during parent/guardian - teacher interviews! Please bring any questions or concerns.
