Quadrilaterals

This morning we had a bit of a change in schedule. We headed to the library to learn about the Forest of Reading! Our class can read books from the French books (Le Tamarac), English Fiction (Silver Birch) and English Non-Fiction. Students need to read 5 books from a category to vote! Mrs. Greer said last year no one voted in for any French books :( We are already reading "Un voyage inattendu" in class, and will be reading one more...so students only need to read 3 on their own to vote!
We crammed a lot into our math class today! We began by defining a quadrilateral, created as many as we could on our geoboards, and then explored parallelograms and trapezoids. We will be exploring more tomorrow! (perhaps...have you checked the weather lately?)

In Social Studies, we read "Shin-chi's Canoe," a story about two young Indigenous children who are shipped off to Residential School. We also read an interview of Dennis Greene, a Residential School survivor. We learned some shocking truths about these schools. This helped us complete a Know/Want to Know/Learned chart, and many students had thought-provoking questions such as "why couldn't the parents visit their children at the school?" and "why did the teachers perpetuate the violent atmosphere at the schools?" Ask your child what they learned - this is a difficult topic and children may need to discuss it with an adult.
Last period for PhysEd we ended up practicing our basketball skills again, but in more structured 3 on 3 rotational games. It really allowed students to shine and show off their skills learned through the unit - so many have really come a long way from not being sure how to dribble!
Have a safe night and check the weather tomorrow!
