Brrr what a change to the temperatures we've been having this week! Students spent a chilly time outside for APQ and then bundled up more for first recess... Students worked extremely well this morning on their book reports - the amount of concentration was outstanding. I praised them several times this morning, but a little extra at home could never hurt ;) We also had our last painting time for our 1 point perspective art. It is now to do at home or at recess.
In math, we looked at improper fractions, or those greater than a whole (e.g., 6/4). We tried several examples by drawing them out on our white boards, sharing ideas with a partner, and checking out others' ideas by holding up our white boards. Some students quickly started independent work on some questions while others worked with me at the board to go over some more examples. We'll have more time to work on these tomorrow.

Our afternoon began with art. This lesson was looking at interactive art, or art that humans can change/be a part of. We looked at an installation of nylon poles in Salt Lake City, an LED blob that reacted to you shining light over it, and 3D street art. Ask your child what their favourite video was! Students then formed small groups and will be creating their own interactive art piece, using whatever they would like and interpreting "interactive" as they would like. I'm interested to see how they turn out!
Finally, we got to chat with a very cool professor and structural engineer at McMaster University over Skype in the library! He talked to us about his job as a professor and engineer, how forces on structures affected his job, and answered dozens of inquisitive student questions. Ask your child what they learned!
